What Are the Ingredients in FlexGuard? The Full Label, Row by Row

Quick answer

One FlexGuard capsule holds eight named ingredients, each with a printed amount: glucosamine sulfate 500 mg, boswellia 67 mg, chondroitin 50 mg, turmeric root 50 mg, and quercetin, methionine, MSM and bromelain at 8 mg each. That totals 699 mg. It contains shellfish (crayfish).

A label is the only part of a supplement you can read before you pay. This page copies the FlexGuard panel, adds up the numbers, and says in plain words what each row is. It also covers the questions people type: what is in it, what is MSM, and what the label does not tell you.

What are the ingredients in FlexGuard?

The Supplement Facts panel lists serving size as one capsule and servings per container as 30. There is no proprietary blend. Every one of the eight active rows has its own amount, which is why a full check is possible.

Ingredient on the panelAmount per capsule
Glucosamine sulfate500 mg
Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata), herb67 mg
Chondroitin sulfate50 mg
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), root50 mg
Quercetin (Sophora japonica), bud8 mg
Methionine8 mg
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)8 mg
Bromelain (Ananas comosus), stem8 mg
Other ingredientsHypromellose (vegetable capsule), rice flour

Allergen line: Contains Shellfish (Crayfish). The panel prints a dagger instead of a percent Daily Value, because none of these rows has an established Daily Value.

What does the FlexGuard ingredients list add up to?

Add 500, 67, 50, 50 and four rows of 8 mg, and you get 699 mg of active material in one capsule. Glucosamine sulfate alone takes 500 mg, about 71 per cent of the total. Seven rows split what is left, which is 199 mg.

The percentage is of the declared actives only, not of the whole capsule. The shell and the rice flour weigh something too, and the label does not print that weight. The sum is only possible because no blend total hides the figures. In this category, many labels print one number for a whole blend, and then no such sum can be done.

What is each FlexGuard ingredient, in simple words?

Glucosamine sulfate (500 mg). An amino sugar that the body uses in cartilage. The supplement form is made from crustacean shell, which is why the allergen line names crayfish. It is the most-studied row, and the major trials used 1,500 mg a day.

Boswellia serrata (67 mg). Indian frankincense, the resin of a tree long used in Ayurvedic medicine. Its trials used 100 to 250 mg of a standardised extract. The label prints no extract ratio, so the match is only indicative.

Chondroitin sulfate (50 mg). A long cartilage molecule, glucosamine's usual partner. The Cochrane review pooled 43 trials, found a small pain improvement at low quality of evidence, and drew on amounts of 800 to 1,200 mg a day.

Turmeric root (50 mg). The spice that colours curry. The research is on curcuminoids, which are a small share of the root and most of a standardised extract. The label says root, so it is not an extract.

What is MSM, and why is it in a joint supplement?

MSM is short for methylsulfonylmethane. It is an organic sulfur compound found in small amounts in food and made industrially for supplements. It is one of the best-selling joint ingredients in the United States, which is why people search what is MSM joint supplement.

Here is the catch on this label. The MSM trials ran in grams. A 2006 pilot gave 3 g twice a day, and a 2011 study used 1.125 g three times a day. A 2017 review describes a literature running from about 1.5 g to 6 g a day. FlexGuard has 8 mg. So the unit differs from its own research, and the label should not be read as an MSM dose.

What are quercetin, methionine and bromelain doing there?

Quercetin (8 mg). A flavonoid found in onions, apples and tea, taken here from the bud of the Japanese pagoda tree. It is poorly absorbed, and supplement intakes in the literature start at 250 mg a day.

Methionine (8 mg). An essential amino acid you get from protein in food. A single egg carries a few hundred milligrams. Its link to joints is indirect, since the body converts it into SAMe, and SAMe, not methionine, has the joint research.

Bromelain (8 mg). Protein-digesting enzymes from the pineapple stem. The review of its osteoarthritis studies found small trials with doses in the hundreds of milligrams. The panel prints no enzyme activity figure.

What does the FlexGuard label leave out?

  • No extract ratio or standardisation figure for the boswellia or the turmeric.
  • No enzyme activity figure for the bromelain.
  • No Daily Value for any row, since none of these eight has one established.
  • No weight for the shell or the rice flour.
  • No named manufacturing site, and no independent certificate of analysis.

What is not in the capsule is just as clear. There is no stimulant, no caffeine, no sweetener, no flavouring and no colouring. There is no gelatin, because the shell is hypromellose. There is no collagen, hyaluronic acid or vitamin D. The only declared allergen is shellfish.

A vegetable capsule is not a vegetarian product

The shell is plant-derived. The glucosamine inside it is made from crustacean shell. The panel says Contains: Shellfish (Crayfish), so the product is unsuitable for a shellfish allergy and for a vegan or vegetarian diet.

One more quirk. The seller's ingredient graphic names six of the eight rows. MSM and bromelain are on the printed panel but not in the picture. Where the two differ, the panel is the list that governs, and the bottle in your hand is the final word.

Why does every row show a dagger and no percentage?

A Daily Value is a reference amount set for vitamins and minerals. None of these eight ingredients is a vitamin or a mineral, and none has an established Daily Value. So the column that would carry a percentage carries a dagger instead. The federal labelling rule explains how a row with no Daily Value is marked.

How do you check the panel against your own bottle?

  1. Read the serving size. It should say one capsule, with 30 servings per container.
  2. Compare each of the eight amounts with the table on this page.
  3. Read the other-ingredients line and the allergen line.
  4. Find the lot code and best-before date on the base.
  5. If anything differs, trust the bottle and tell [email protected] so the page can be corrected.

Frequently asked questions

What are the ingredients in FlexGuard?

Glucosamine sulfate 500 mg, boswellia 67 mg, chondroitin sulfate 50 mg, turmeric root 50 mg, and quercetin, methionine, MSM and bromelain at 8 mg each. Other ingredients are hypromellose and rice flour.

How much does one FlexGuard capsule hold in total?

The eight printed amounts add up to 699 mg of active material, of which 500 mg is glucosamine sulfate.

Does FlexGuard contain shellfish?

Yes. The panel prints Contains: Shellfish (Crayfish), because the glucosamine is made from crustacean shell. It is not vegan or vegetarian.

What is MSM in a joint supplement?

MSM is methylsulfonylmethane, an organic sulfur compound. Its trials ran in grams a day, while FlexGuard holds 8 mg.

Does the label say how strong the boswellia or turmeric is?

No. It names the plant and part and prints the weight, but no extract ratio or standardisation figure.

Is there caffeine or a stimulant in FlexGuard?

No. The panel lists no stimulant, sweetener, flavouring or colouring, and the only other ingredients are the capsule shell and rice flour.

Our view

FlexGuard's label is easy to respect and easy to question. It respects you by printing every amount. It invites questions because most rows are small next to the amounts their own research used. Both things are true, and a good label lets you see both.

If you buy it, read the panel on your own bottle, because it is the authority. Skip the product with a shellfish allergy, and ask your doctor first if you take warfarin or any other medicine.
